What can happen if I do not log out of my e-mail account and someone else uses it?
Many bad things can happen, including another person could read your e-mail messages, delete them, and send harassing, and/or illegal messages and make it look like you sent them. You will have a difficult time proving that you did not send them.
What can happen if I do not log out of Blackboard?
Blackboard is your gateway to many services. If you do not log out of Blackboard, others can view your financial and academic information, access your e-mail, pretend to be you, and modify or delete information that is important to you.
What can someone else see in Webcat if I do not log out and walk away from the computer?
The other person will see exactly what you see when you log into your account.
Could I lose access to my account if I do not log out?
In most on-line services you can change your password when you are logged in. Therefore, if you do not log out and allow others to access your account, they can not only use your account to violate university policy or the law, but they can also lock you out of your account by changing your password.
How do I know how to log out of my accounts?
Look for specific directions to log out and exit the browser before walking away from the screen. Shut-down your personal computer when you are done using it. Remember that closing a window in a web browser is not the same as exiting the program.
Is it safe to step away from my computer for a short period of time without logging out?
No.
Should I have the computer programs that I use remember my password?
Your password is intended to be known only by you, and it intended to be entered manually when you access on-line service. If you let the programs that you use remember your password, you make it easier for others to access your account even if you log out after every session. In particular, you should never select the option to have the program remember your password on public machines that other use.
