Save Face - Protect Yourself and Your Computer
You need to protect your privacy when you use the Internet and other electronic resources. Take a few minutes to learn about ways to keep your privacy and identity secure, and your computer safe, by reviewing the following checklist!
| Don’t lose face using Facebook.com – Review Do’s and Don’ts about Facebook to ensure your interactions on Facebook are fun and not, well, embarrassing. | |
| Verify the source of an e-mail message BEFORE you reply and share any personal information. | |
| Don’t share any personal information including your student ID, Blackboard account, Webmail account, passwords, date of birth, Mother’s maiden name, etc. with anyone you don’t know or for any reason that isn’t made clear to you. CIS staff, for example, would never ask you to reveal an account password. | |
| It’s not just computers and the Internet; don’t give out any personal information over the phone to someone claiming to be doing a survey, for example. | |
| It’s not just you that needs to be safe; you need to protect your computer, too. Be sure to use virus protection, ensure all Windows Updates for your operating system are complete, set up your system with Up2Date and regularly install patches. Login to MyUNH and review the "UNH - Computing@UNH" module for more important information. | |
| And you also have to think about your laptop, removable media like flash drives, your cell phone, or PDA – protect these mobile devices with a password. If they’re lost, your information will still be safe. | |
| Remember to always log out of applications you’re using like Webmail, Blackboard, Webcat, the computer you’re using at a student computing cluster, etc. | |
| Use VPN when you’re using a wireless connection. It makes your connections secure and it’s free for PC users! |
